Unification...

This evening it all came together when I applied a coat of primer to Henrik and for the first time I've had a glimpse of what the finished locomotive will look like. I can't wait to progress it further...

  1. Ok James, that's looking good - the paint really shows those rivets to effect - I'd better get some too. Was this good ole Halfords primer... or something slightly more exotic and controlable?

  2. Nope - just the Halfords primer Jon, misted on gently with 'dabs' on the nozzle. I don't like dowsing a model in the stuff, i find 'dabs' to be more controllable. As it dries it sort of self smooths anyway so I don't worry about building up a textured layer even in the smaller scales.

  3. James, I need to practice a bit more on some old coach bodies... so will try the gentler misting approach, dabbing at the nozzle as I go. It does seem to sort itself out when drying... but I need to make sure I don't overdo it as I did to start off with on the coach on its first coat. It's a reasonable paint and seems to cover most materials quote well; I have some railmatch white primer to go over the noses afterwards to get a better base for the yellow... although Ian Rathbone didn't think I'd need this - other RMW threads suggested otherwise.

  4. Yeah definitely use a white on the ends, but if you use white on the sides the blue will look quite faded and a touch too bright.
I use the plastic primer, rather than standard. It's apparently designed to flex with plastic more, no idea if it makes any difference on small plastic models but it seems to make sense to me :)
